How to Import a Filename List into Lightroom (Client Photo Selections)

There is no button in Lightroom actually labelled 'import filename list into Lightroom' — but there is a fast, reliable way to do exactly that, and once you know it, isolating a client's chosen photos takes under a minute instead of an evening of scrolling. Your client hands you a list of filenames; this is how you turn that list into precisely the right set of images on screen, ready to edit.
This assumes you already have the list. Getting a clean one out of your client is its own skill — covered in how to get clients to select their photos faster — but here we will take it as given and focus purely on the Lightroom side.
The short version
Library module → show the Filter Bar → Text → Filename → Contains → paste your comma-separated list of filenames. The grid collapses to just those photos. Select them all, drop them into a collection, and edit from there. Everything below is the detail that keeps that from going wrong.
The exact steps
- In the Library module, switch to Grid view (press G) and open the folder — or the whole catalog — that holds the raw files you want to filter.
- Show the Filter Bar across the top of the grid: press the backslash key (\), or choose View → Show Filter Bar.
- Click Text. In the first dropdown choose Filename. In the second dropdown — the operator — choose Contains.
- Paste your list of filenames into the search field, each name separated by a comma. Lightroom reads the commas as OR, so the grid immediately shows every photo whose name matches any entry on the list.
- That filtered grid is your client's selection. Press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select all of it.
What a proper filename list looks like
The method lives or dies on the list matching the names in your catalog. A good list is the original camera filenames — the IMG_0421, DSC_3980, or _MG_7742 your camera wrote — separated by commas: IMG_0421, IMG_0433, IMG_0450. Not sequential export numbers, not 'the beach one,' not renamed client-friendly labels.
This is why originals matter. If your proofs keep their original base filename, the list your client sends back matches your raw files directly — 'Contains IMG_0421' finds IMG_0421.CR2 with no extra work. The moment you rename exports to Smith_Wedding_001, 002, 003 before proofing, the list comes back full of names that exist nowhere in your raw catalog, and the filter matches nothing. Keep the base filename identical from camera to proof and the whole workflow simply clicks into place.
The multi-camera trap: two IMG_0001s
Two bodies on the day means two cards that both start counting at IMG_0001. Filter your whole catalog for 'IMG_0001' and Lightroom rightly shows you both — the groom-prep frame from camera A and an unrelated one from camera B. Because 'Contains' matches on the name as text, it cannot tell the two apart.
The fix is to narrow the scope before you filter. In the Folders panel, click into the specific card or folder for one camera, then apply the filter there — Lightroom searches only within the selected folder, so the duplicate on the other card falls out of scope. Better still, rename by capture time or add a per-camera prefix at import so every filename is unique from the start; then a single filtered pass across the whole catalog is safe.
Turn the filtered set into a collection
A filter is temporary — click away and it is gone. Make the selection durable before you start editing. With the filtered grid selected (Ctrl/Cmd+A), either drag it into a new collection, or right-click and create one, or tap the B key to push it into the Quick Collection. Then clear the filter (click None in the Filter Bar). Your chosen photos now live in the collection, and you can flag, colour-label, and edit them without the original 500-photo folder in the way.
When it doesn't work
- Extra spaces in the list. A stray space becomes part of the search term, so a list with an odd trailing space can quietly drop a match. If results look short, strip the spaces so it reads IMG_0421,IMG_0433 — or keep a clean, consistent comma-space throughout.
- Extension mismatch. A list of IMG_0421.jpg will not match your IMG_0421.CR2 raws, because the extensions differ. Use base filenames with no extension — they match every version of the frame at once.
- Renamed files. If the catalog was renamed after import, the original names on the list point to nothing. Match the naming scheme you actually used, or rebuild the list from the originals.
- Partial-name overmatching. 'Contains IMG_042' also catches IMG_0420 through IMG_0429. Use the full base name for each frame so one entry cannot sweep in its neighbours.
